US Dailies: Hizbullah Smuggled Advanced Guided Missiles into Lebanon
Local Editor
Once again, US media is busy with Hizbullah's arsenal.
After many reports on the high level that Hizbullah's arms had reached, the Wall Street Journal reported that "Hizbullah is smuggling advanced guided-missile systems into Lebanon from Syria piece by piece."
"Some components of a powerful anti-ship missile system have already been moved to Lebanon," according to previously undisclosed intelligence, while other systems that could target "Israeli" aircraft, ships and bases are being stored in expanded weapons depots under Hizbullah control in Syria, claimed current and former US officials.
These missiles include, according to the daily, supersonic Yakhont rockets.
Yet "to make it lethal, a system needs to be complete," said a senior military official.
However, the officials highlighted that such guided weapons could sharply increase the party's ability to deter "Israel" in any potential new war.
For its part, the New York Times quoted Ronen Bergman, an analyst with close contacts with "Israeli" intelligence officials, as saying that despite "Israel's" undeclared campaign of airstrikes in Syria to stop new deliveries, most of the long-range surface-to-surface missiles given to Hizbullah have been disassembled and moved to Lebanon.
Bregman claimed that Hizbullah has a network of bases that were built inside Syria, near the border with Lebanon, to give the group strategic depth and to store the missiles.
