After Yabroud, Syrian Army Controls Rankous

The Syrian army advanced into the Syrian border town of Rankous on Wednesday, consolidating their control over a former armed groups' supply line from neighboring Lebanon.

The assault on Rankous is the latest stage of an offensive by the army to seal off the border region and secure the main highway leading north from Damascus towards central Syria, Homs, and the Mediterranean coast.

Al-Manar TV said Rankous was under complete control of the Syrian forces.

Meanwhile, army units were working on deactivating explosives planted by armed groups.

For its part, the so-called "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights"- close to the opposition- monitoring group said fighting continued on the edges of town.

"Units of the Syrian Arab Army are advancing in Rankous and are pursuing the remnants of the terrorists groups on its northern fringes and the surrounding farmlands," the Syrian television said.

The fight for Rankous takes place less than a month after the Syrian army recaptured the stronghold of Yabroud, choking off the vital supply line into central Syria.

Rankous is one of the last terrorist bastions of terrorists who fled Yabroud after the Syrian army liberated it last month.
