’Israel’ Approves Plans for 1,000 More Occupied al-Quds Settler Units
Local Editor
The "Israeli" government has given the green light for the planning of more than 1,000 new settler units in occupied East al-Quds, an official said on Monday.
"The government has decided to advance the planning of more than 1,000 units in Jerusalem [occupied al-Quds]-- roughly 400 in Har Homa and about 600 in Ramat Shlomo," he said in English, referring to two existing occupied East al-Quds settlements.
He did not elaborate.
Earlier, "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in the advanced stages of negotiations to approve 2,000 new housing units in the occupied West Bank, risking criticism from lawmakers at home and capitals in the West, a report on "Israeli" Channel 2 said on Sunday. The Prime Minister's Office and the settlers' representative Yesha Council declined to comment on the report.
The report by "Israeli" Channel 2 said that the keystone of the project would be the approval of 2,000 new units, primarily in settlement blocs, but some also in more remote areas.
An unnamed senior diplomatic source told the outlet that the impending deal was likely to face serious international criticism. The US, a consistent critic of "Israeli" building over the pre-1967 lines, would not find the move acceptable, the report predicted.
Either it won't actually happen, or Netanyahu "will pay a heavy price," Channel 2's diplomatic correspondent said.
Meanwhile, reacting to the report, War Minister Tzipi Livni said the move is "irresponsible from both a diplomatic and security standpoint."
"Plans for more construction, even if it's in the settlement blocs, under such sensitive circumstances that we find ourselves in, is irresponsible from both a diplomatic and security standpoint," she said.
Additionally, Finance Minister Yair Lapid said that more construction "at this stage would lead to a serious crisis in ties with the United States, and it would harm "Israel's" international standing."
Lapid said that while he is in principal not opposed to construction inside the settlement blocs, "at this stage it will cause damage to "Israel"."
