Al-Moallem in Russia, Meets Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi for talks Wednesday, the Kremlin said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin and al-Moallem were discussing "bilateral relations", declining further comment.
Earlier, a senior Syrian diplomat clarified that the " the meeting will centre on the re-launch of negotiations."
He further stated " the fact that Putin is receiving the delegation immediately shows the important he's putting on this visit, because meetings in Moscow are usually held with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov."
Al-Moallem was also due to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Syrian delegation' visit came upon the invitation of Lavrov, according to a statement by Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
In its statement issued on the eve of al-Moallem's visit, the Russian Ministry said the primary issue to be tackled during al-Moallem-Lavrov talks will be the current situation in Syria, "which is still very tense and marked by the increase of the terror threat posed by the extremist groups, including "ISIL" and al-Nusra Front."
