A UN General Assembly committee responsible for global security passed on Tuesday an Egypt-drafted resolution demanding that the Zionist entity give up its nuclear arsenal and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight.

UN Draft Resolution Calls on ’Israel’ to Give up Nuclear Arms In a move that echoed a similar Arab-backed effort that failed to gain approval in September at the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], the draft passed would have to be approved by the 193-member General Assembly to be effective.

Entitled "The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East," the non-binding draft resolution, obtained the support of 161 states against five others including the United States, while 18 countries abstained from the vote.

The resolution calls for "Israel" to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and place all of its nuclear facilities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards.

It exhorts "Israel" "to renounce possession of nuclear weapons as an important confidence-building measure among all states of the region and as a step towards enhancing peace and security."

"Israel" possess a substantial nuclear arsenal, which it does not officially acknowledge.
