Wahhab Syria "will not sell its allies for a Summit which will produce nothing"
Source: NowLebanon, 03-03-2008
Former Minister Wiam Wahhab said that any solution to the current crisis in Lebanon was elusive and no longer an internal matter. "We do not fight the March 14 team, we fight the American onslaughts which fell in the July War," he added.
Wahhab asserted that the Arab initiative led nowhere. Saudi Arabia and America, he continued, did not want the initiative to succeed and tried to blackmail Syria by asking Syria to "facilitate the elections in Lebanon" so that the US and Saudi would "facilitate the Summit in Damascus" in return. "But Syria will not sell its allies in Lebanon for an Arab Summit which will produce nothing," Wahhab said.
Wahhab deemd Syria's ties with the Resistance in Lebanon unshakable. The former minister added that many facts around the assassination of Hizbullah operative Imad Moghnieh would be uncovered after the Arab Summit, set to be held March 29-30 in Damascus. Regarding Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's threat of "open war" on "Israel" at the mass rally marking Mugyniyah's funeral, a statement which has provoked outrage and apprehension among the international community, "Israel" and the ruling majority in Lebanon, Wahhab said the decision of war-and-peace was "in the hands of 'Israel'."
"Hizbullah operates within the boundaries set by the ministerial statement of the incumbent government. We warn the team in power: if 'Israel' launches war on us and you are partners in this war, we will treat you as 'Israelis'."
Wahhab emphasized that the Lebanese opposition would not participate in the Special Tribunal. "The witnesses who stood before the International Commission in Monteverdi will not stand before the Special Tribunal, whose loyalties are well-known," he concluded.
