Netanyahu Plans to Present New Gov’t by April 22
Local Editor
"Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to present a new government by April 22, the "Israeli" Jerusalem Post, quoting sources close to the PM's office, reported on Wednesday.
Netanyahu won a sweeping victory on Tuesday night, beating the Zionist Union by at least six seats, 30 to 24, freeing him to form a right-wing nationalist coalition with Kulanu, the Jewish Home, Yisrael Beytenu, Shas and United Torah Judaism, rather than a national-unity government with the Zionist Union.
President Reuven Rivlin is to begin consultations with the elected parties on Sunday, most probably appointing Netanyahu to form a government after official results come in next Wednesday.
In an official statement, the Likud said Netanyahu intended to form a government as soon as possible. "Reality will not wait for us," the statement said. "Reality does not take time out. The people of Israel expect us to quickly build a leadership team that will work for them on security and socioeconomic issues as we promised."
In his first interview since Tuesday, the Zionist Union head Isaac Herzog told Thursday Army Radio that he refuses to clean up after Netanyahu: "Reality dictates that we sit in the opposition. We will serve as an alternative. What Netanyahu has done over the last few days was bordering on racism. He has ruined our relationship with have with our international allies. The American response is not that simple and I refuse to clean up after him."
It is important to mention that although it seems that Netanyahu will continue to serve in office for the fourth time, Rivlin is not bound by law to task him with forming a government.
Currently the count has benefited left wing Meretz party, which added one seat to five, only barely clearing the 3.25% threshold for representation in the Knesset. The Likud also received another seat, rising to 30 seats.
According to daily Haaretz's military commentator Amos Harel the security situation remains the major consideration when the "Israelis" vote.
"It seems that the occupation's moral and political implications...aren't the "Israeli" voter's main concern. Security risks concern him much more, and this angst is well founded," he wrote Thursday.
"The cumulative impression is that most voters adopt the right's conclusions on the security front - the responsibility for the negotiations freeze lies with the Palestinians too, not just with Israel - and the chances of resolving the conflict are slim at the moment," added Harel.
On the days after the election, Harel said, "the immediate question will be Iran, based on the progress in the Iran-P5+1 talks on Tehran's nuclear program. Netanyahu has very little influence on this matter despite all the attention he pays to it. The US administration will pay little heed to Israel's arguments on an accord," despite the famous (or infamous) Congress speech.
