Berri Stresses Importance of Electoral Law, Rules Out "Israeli" attack
Source: NowLebanon, 10-03-2008
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri ruled out the possibility of an 'Israeli' attack against Lebanon and reassured the Lebanese that sectarian strife will not find its way into the country.
Berri also stressed on the need to find an immediate solution to the political crisis and reiterated the opposition's commitment to the Arab initiative.
"The opposition is still holding to the election of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman as president, the formation of a national-unity government and the adoption of an electoral law," he told the Lebanese daily As-Safir.
Berri said that the majority wants the adoption of an electoral law whereby Christians elect Christians and Muslims elect Muslims.
"The opposition is pressing for bigger electoral constituencies, not small ones," he said.
"Once the majority has a final say on this matter, the opposition will declare its official stance in this regard," he added.
Berri said that the electoral law is the most important item in the Lebanese dossier. "It is more important and dangerous than the presidential elections and the establishment of a government," he said.
