Karami Upholds Taif Accord
Source: Nowlebanon.com, 11-03-2008
Former Prime Minster Omar Karami said the March 8 bloc welcomed the news of an upcoming conference, dubbed "Spring 2008," planned by the March 14 bloc.
"It is well-known that there are two fronts today, March 8 and March 14," Karami said. "We (March 8) have also begun a cooperative process which we will announce next week."
The opposition announced that the pro-government alliance had to declare the electoral law they found most appropriate, the ex-Premier added. "Then the opposition will give their opinion."
Karami said the Tripoli-based National Gathering bloc agreed on the Taif Accord as central to the resolution of the Lebanese crisis.
"In the past, Amr Moussa was biased and the proposal he offered was unbalanced and did not adhere to the ‘no victor no vanquished' formula," he continued.
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa's efforts came to a standstill after pro-government and opposition members failed to reach an agreement on a fair electoral law and a formula for a national-unity government through the four-party meetings Moussa convened in Beirut last month.
"We feel there are movements abroad, such as the four-party meetings and the meeting with Prince Saud al-Faisal. I hope these projects will bear fruit which is fair to everyone," Karami concluded.
