Seniora and His History of Scandals at Arab Summits
Source: Al Manar TV, 13-03-2008
Seniora has quite a history of scandals at Arab summits namely the Khartoum and Riyadh summits. In March 2006, Seniora tried to revolt against the ministerial statement that gave his government confidence at parliament in 2005, the statement which clearly stated the right of the resistance to continue its armed struggle to regain the remainder of occupied Lebanese territories and the Lebanese hostages in 'Israeli' prisons. In Khartoum, Seniora challenged then Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Lebanon's public opinion by attempting to delete an article from the summit's final statement. The article stressed Arab support to the right of the resistance in armed struggle against the 'Israeli' occupation of Lebanese territories. A few months later, Shiite ministers resigned from Seniora's government in protest to his conduct and Seniora became an unconstitutional Prime Minister heading an unconstitutional government. According to the Lebanese constitution and the national charter, when a whole sect is not represented in the government, the government should step down, early elections should be held and a new government should be formed.
This did not happen and Seniora's ruling team have continued to violate the constitution ever since. The following year, the Riyadh Summit witnessed a Seniora attempt to legitimize his unconstitutional government. He sought to use the term 'support to the Lebanese government' instead of 'support to Lebanon' in the final statement. However Lahoud rose against him and foiled his attempt.
