Obama, Netanyahu Meet after Tensions
Local Editor
US President Barack Obama and Zionist PM Benjamin Netanyahu met on Monday for the first time since the latter lost his battle against the Iran nuclear deal.
Netanyahu infuriated the White House by urging Congress to reject an emerging accord with Iran earlier in March.
The meeting was clouded by the controversy following Netanyahu's appointment of a new spokesman who has spoken derisively about Obama.
Yet, it resulted in both parts agreeing to expedite talks on a new 10-year American military aid package for the Occupation forces, aiming at finalizing the issue before the end of Obama's Presidential term.
The "Israeli entity" receives $3.1 billion from the US annually and wants $5 billion per year for the next package, for a total of $50 billion over a decade. One US official predicted the sides would settle this time for an annual sum of $4 billion to $5 billion.
Earlier, in comments to the press ahead of the meeting, the two sides largely sidestepped the Iran nuclear issue. Obama further claimed he would seek Netanyahu's thoughts on ways to lower tensions between "Israelis" and Palestinians.
Obama and Netanyahu talked at length about the situation in Syria in which Netanyahu claimed he could "don't allow Iran to open a second front in the Golan Heights, and we will disrupt any weapon transfers from Syria to Lebanon."
In public, both sides emphasized areas of shared interest, including negotiations on a new so-called "security arrangement" and the goal of "peace" between "Israelis" and Palestinians, coinciding with the fresh outbreaks of the Palestinian uprising.
Nevertheless, Netanyahu was said to be offering a series of confidence-building measures toward the Palestinians, including easing restrictions on communications, water usage and work permits.
However, "Israel" has given preliminary approval for a new settlement project in the West Bank.
