Aoun: Long live Syria and Iran if they support a fair electoral law
Source: NowLebanon.com, 27-03-2008
MP Michel Aoun, head of the Free Patriotic Movement, said that the Lebanese government has made an unprecedented rejection of an agreement between two Lebanese parties that is aimed at spreading a culture of peace and openness in the country.
Aoun was referring to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the FPM and Hizbullah, which he added has been "assaulted" by the government the same way the document issued after consultations with Christian leaders in Rabieh was criticized.
He also noted that the FPM wants the establishment of a secular state in order to do away with sectarianism.
"The absence of Christian participation in power is a political displacement to them," Aoun said during an interview on OTV last night.
Aoun also accused PM Fouad Saniora of using the Maronite Patriarch as a cover. "Sfeir is being used as a substitute representative of Christians, while he is not."
"As long as the Arab initiative is on, the opposition still supports the presidential candidacy of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman," he added.
Aoun accused the US of trying to destabilize Lebanon, as the "policy of isolation they are implementing does not serve the country's stability."
"If the whole world tries to convince me that US policy is appropriate for Lebanon, I will remain firm, because we can learn lessons from past experiences with it," Aoun said.
He added that when the Lebanese attack Syria, it gives Damascus the right to retaliate. "And then they accused Damascus of interfering in Lebanon," he added.
"What is the relation between the electoral law and Syria and Iran? If they are supporting a just and fair electoral law, long live Syria and Iran," he said.
He also accused the government of dragging Lebanon from bad situations to worse.
"My presidential candidate is still Army Commander General Michel Sleiman," Aoun said. "No regional war will take place because of lack of balance between powers. And if 'Israel' will start a war, it will face a major failure," Aoun added.
