"Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long counted his British counterpart, David Cameron, as a staunch friend in a shrinking world of dependable allies.

Netanyahu Rebukes Cameron for Criticizing ’Israel’

Yet that did not prevent him from responding sharply on Thursday to Cameron's assertion that he found "Israel's" "effective encirclement" of East al-Quds and the extent of its construction in that contested territory "genuinely shocking."

Netanyahu spoke at a gathering of settlers from his conservative Likud Party in the southern settlement of Ofakim.

"David Cameron seems to have forgotten a few basic facts," Netanyahu retorted.

Earlier Thursday, Mayor of occupied al-Quds Nir Barkat also hit out at Cameron, questioning his knowledge of the region and pointing a finger at the UK for its policies during the pre-state British Mandate.

On Wednesday, Cameron, responding to a question in the House of Commons, told British lawmakers: "Yes, we are supporters of "Israel", but we do not support illegal settlements, we do not support what is happening in East al-Quds."

For his part, the Zionist Minister of Foreign Affairs, Avigdor Lieberman, did not issue any official response to Cameron's remarks.

"Israel", he claimed, "maintains the rule of law for all, something that doesn't exist in Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Libya, or in large parts of the Middle East, including the Palestinian Authority and Gaza. It is important that our friends in Europe remember that simple fact."
