Kerry in Brussels, Suicide Bombers were Known to US!
Local Editor
US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Brussels Friday to show solidarity and offer US assistance after Tuesday's Deah-claimed bombings which killed 31 people and injured about 270.
Kerry, travelling from Moscow, landed at Brussels airport where one of Tuesday's attacks occurred.
He will meet with Belgian officials including Prime Minister Charles Michel and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, as well as EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Before departing, he will lay a wreath at the site of the airport attack.
Two government ministers offered to step down over security lapses that have drawn international criticism of an apparent reluctance to tackle the terrorists effectively, but Prime Minister Charles Michel rejected their resignations.
Kerry will repeat a US offer to help with the investigation and efforts to fight terrorism.
Brussels is a large diplomatic and military base for Americans working at US missions in the city as well as at the European Union and NATO.
The attacks came four months after Daesh militants carried out bombings and shootings in Paris that killed 130 people.
Meanwhile, NBC News revealed that the two suicide bombers who attacked Brussels airport were reportedly listed in US databases as potential terror threats.
According to US officials, Khalid and Ibrahim El Bakraoui were known to US counter terrorism authorities prior to Tuesday morning, when the pair and a third man devastated the Belgian capital.
The officials would not say on which of the many US terrorism databases the brothers were listed.
But the disclosure does raise questions about how Belgian authorities could describe the men simple as petty criminals who were not on their counter-terrorism radar, the network said. It also raises questions about the extent to which Western nations are effectively sharing information that could prevent attacks.
The security lapses in a country that is home to the European Union and NATO have drawn international criticism of an apparent reluctance to tackle Islamist radicals effectively.
The Associated Press said that the Dutch justice minister on Thursday confirmed that one of the Brussels suicide bombers was flown from Turkey to Amsterdam in July, but said that authorities were not told why and had no reason to detain him.
