Qabalan calls for a comprehensive solution
Source: The Daily Star, 19-04-2008
Higher Shiite Council vice president Sheikh Abdel-Amir Qabalan called for a "comprehensive" solution to the Lebanese crisis.
"We do not just want to elect a new president, we also want to create a national unity government and approve a just electoral law so that solution in Lebanon will be comprehensive within one basket," Qabalan said in his Friday sermon.
He called for eliminating tension and "sensibility" in an effort to face strife and conspiracies.
"Muslims are brothers and all the Lebanese are brothers," he said. "We want justice, while staying away from overbidding, especially that we do not want to marginalize anybody."
Qabalan called for a "serious" and "honest" investigation into the February 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
"We are not with the four security chiefs if they are involved [in the crime] but they should not be arrested without pressing charges against them," he said. "We want to preserve Hariri's blood and achieve justice."
Former General Security chief Jamil al-Sayyed, former Presidential Guard commander Mustafa Hamdan, ex-Internal Security Forces boss Ali al-Hajj and former army intelligence head General Raymond Azar, have been detained for more than two years on suspicion of involvement in Hariri's killing.
