BEIRUT: Islamic scholar Fathi Yakan, head of the Islamic Action Front, called on all MPs to elect Lebanese Army commander General Michel Suleiman, "the only consensus candidate," as president on April 22. "Since the US insists on rejecting the presidential elections and is allowing the prime minister to handle the presidential authorities because he obeys the US and adopts its policies, we call on all MPs to elect Suleiman on April 22," Yakan said. He added that electing a president would be a breakthrough in the present political deadlock, and "thus will obstruct the negative effects of US policy on the region."
