Voting centers, which number over 7,300, opened their doors to voters early in the morning and will remain open until 07:00 pm. The duration of the elections can be extended for five hours by a decision from the Higher Judicial Committee for Elections.

In this regard, candidates began their elections campaigns on March 14th, which continued until the morning of Tuesday April 12th, at the same time as the judicial subcommittees for the elections announced their readiness to carry out and supervise the electoral process.

It was on February 22 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree calling for parliamentary elections in the country. In late March, al-Assad told media that no major changes were expected in the country's parliament after elections under current conditions.

Meanwhile, the Wednesday parliamentary elections are the second to be held in the country since the beginning of the war in 2011. The latest parliamentary elections were held in May 2012, with voter turnout exceeding 51 percent, which is equal to some five million people, according to Syria's electoral committee.

To cover this event, a media center for mass media outlets was set up at Sheraton Hotel in Damascus.
