German Chancellor Angela Merkel has slammed the apartheid "Israeli" settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories as "counterproductive" to the so-called "peace process".

In a joint press conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Berlin on Tuesday, Merkel expressed concerns over the stalemate in the Middle East negotiations.

"I am critical of the settlement policy," Merkel said, adding she had conveyed her concern to the "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

She further stated: "I have expressed my mind critically to the "Israeli" Prime Minister many times that ... these settlement activities are counter-productive."

Abbas, for his part, stressed that Tel Aviv's settling "development is the biggest problem for the attainment of freedom."

In parallel, he thanked Germany for its "continuous support ... to put us in the position to build our state institutions, to lay the groundwork for a permanent infrastructure for our future nation."

Abbas also met with German President Joachim Gauck and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier as part of his international tour to secure support for a United Nations vote to officially condemn the "Israeli" settlement policy.

The PA president will be in New York this week to sign a global climate agreement. He is expected to meet with French President Francois Hollande on the sidelines, diplomats say, and will likely discuss the Palestinian draft resolution.
