MP Nicolas: We must talk frankly with Syria ~ what was a socialist French MP doing in Dahiya?!
Source: NowLebanon, 02-05-2008
MP Nabil Nicolas of the Change and Reform bloc headed by MP Michel Aoun said that Speaker Nabih Berri's suggestion for dialogue is aimed at facilitating the election of a president.
"Berri has followed the majority's call on the condition that a dialogue is held at the parliament. Instead of a dialogue between 128 MPs, it will be restricted to the heads of the parliamentary blocs so a solution can be found," Nicolas told ANB Television.
Commenting on Aoun's statement that a visit to Syria is a "dear step," Nicolas stressed on the need to sit and talk frankly with the Syrians about "both the things we agree on and the problematic issues."
"This is in Lebanon's interests. Two million people died during the war between France and Germany, but they have friendly relations today," Nicolas noted.
Commenting on MP Walid Jumblatt's accusation that Hizbullah is establishing private landline networks and is conducting surveillance on runway 17 of Beirut's international airport, Nicolas noted that the airport is close to regions where the resistance is located. "This is a source of security concerns for it. All Lebanese install surveillance cameras."
On Hizbullah's detention of French MP Karim Pakzad, Nicolas said, "Aren't there any tourist-friendly places in Lebanon other than Beirut's southern suburbs? What was a socialist French MP doing in the Bir al-Abed region?"
Nicolas also noted that the relation between General Michel Aoun and General Michel Sleiman is very good, "although we have some concerns that need to be clarified."
