Vice President of the Higher Islamic Shia Muslim Council Sheikh Abdul Amir Qabalan denounced the accusations politicians were throwing at each other, referring to the latest polemic concerning surveillance cameras erected by Hizbullah to monitor Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport.
Qabalan said Hizbullah's only "crime" was its resistance against 'Israel' as he expressed his full support for Shoucair, a "wise and politically neutral man."
He added that "whoever thinks that the airport's head of security and security system could be removed is delusional."
He then called on politicians to tone down their "offensive" speeches and try using more rational rhetoric in order to preserve the country's unity, sovereignty and independence.
The vice president expressed his belief in Lebanon as a sovereign state. "Lebanon is not ‘owned' by anyone, but is for all Lebanese."
Sheikh Qabalan called for the protection of Lebanon's borders, ports and airports, defending airport security head General Wafik Shkeir against Progressive Socialist Party head Wald Jumblatt's allegations of affiliation with Hizbullah. "Shkeir does not belong to Hizbullah or Amal. He is a national, rational man and his position cannot be slandered," he added. Qabalan requested airport security forces search every aircraft arriving to and departing from Lebanon without exception, particularly American planes.
Qabalan also denounced Jumblatt's "tendentious call for the expulsion of the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon. "We demand rational discourse, and if anyone has made a mistake, we demand accountability through the judicial system, and not through slander and incitement."
