Karami: The government resignation is part of a complete deal
Source: NowLebanon, 13-05-2008
Former Premier Omar Karami pointed out that the resignation of the "unconstitutional cabinet" will be part an agreement on all issues.
"Some people say that the resignation of the cabinet without an elected president will put the country in a political vacuum... Therefore, we hope that the Arab Committee will reach an agreement with all parties that will allow us to get out of this crisis through constitutional means."
Karami emphasized that the opposition supports the Arab initiative, which is based on three articles, "but when the majority refuses to talk about the other issues before electing the president, they increase our suspicions that when we elect the president, they will not share power with us."
Karami blamed the government's decisions to sack the airport head of security for his alleged ties to Hizbullah and to declare the party's private network of landlines illegal for the current crisis. "What is needed now is that the government takes back these decisions so that a political solution can take place."
Karami said that the army has shown great "wisdom and courage" and did what it was supposed to do in order to protect the country's unity.
Karami concluded his statement by asking all the gunmen in the streets of Tripoli "to avoid useless strife that will benefit no one."
