Wahhab: Saniora government should resign
Source: alalam.ir, 15-05-2008
BEIRUT- Revoking measures against Hizbullah is not sufficient and the Lebanese government should step down to restore calm to the nation, a opposition member says.
Leader of the opposition Tohid (Monotheism) Movement, Wiam Wahhab, told Alalam Wednesday: "The government rowed back on its wrong measures, but after hundreds of people were killed or injured, revoking the decision was not enough."
Following a lengthy cabinet meeting, Information Minister Ghazi Aridi said: "In order to facilitate the negotiations of the Arab League delegation and to preserve national unity and the security of citizens, the government has decided to accept the decisions of the army" concerning Hizbullah.
Last week, the Lebanese government had announced a probe into a telecommunication network set up by Hizbullah and had reassigned the head of security at Beirut airport on suspicions he was close to the resistance group.
Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said he regarded the moves as a declaration of war.
Calling the Lebanese Prime Minister a "political crocodile", Wahhab said Saniora should step down "since he is the sole individual to be held accountable for the recent events."
Wahhab said the government decision is the latest sign that the group appears to have gained the upper hand in a power struggle with the government.
He stressed the opposition abandoned civil disobedience after the government decided to scrap the anti-Hizbullah measures.
Wahhab also said holding snap parliamentary elections; adopting an electoral law and electing the consensus president could lead the crisis-hit country out of the turmoil.
