Zarif: Iran to Boost Cooperation with Lebanon

Mohammad Javad Zarif made his remarks during a meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Tamamm Salam.

The Iranian FM, who was accompanied by a high-profile political and economic delegation, arrived Monday in Lebanon for talks with senior officials.

It is Iran's first official visit to Lebanon after the election of Michel Aoun president on Oct. 31, ending the 2-1/2 year presidential vacuum.

Zarif met with President Aoun shortly after he landed in Beirut, congratulating him on his election as the country's 13th president.

The election of a president without any foreign interference as an "important achievement," Zarif said.

"We think the success of Lebanon in holding the presidential election following a relatively long period of vacuum is considered an achievement and a victory for all of the dear Lebanese people."

Iran's FM also visited the Foreign Ministry where he held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil on bilateral relations.
