The Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, Liu Jieyi averred that his British counterpart Matthew Rycroft should stop "poisoning" the atmosphere and "abusing" the forum with his remarks adding that the latter should also refrain from distorting the positions of other countries.

Rycroft had criticized China's pro-Russian stance regarding the latest resolution on Aleppo and expressed surprise that China had joined Russia in vetoing it.

"[Russia and China] have chosen to veto not because of a lack of consultation, but because of their long-standing, misplaced faith in a despot who has killed nearly half a million of his own people," Rycroft said.

Accordingly, China's UN ambassador gave a strong-worded response to his British counterpart saying that the Security Council is "a solemn forum" and "not a place where groundless attacks can be made to other countries' positions."

Jieyi also asked Rycroft to stop "poisoning the atmosphere" of the forum, pointing out that "this is not the first time" the UK representative had committed such a practice.

This came as Russia and China, on Monday, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have demanded a seven-day truce in Syria's Aleppo.

The resolution was set forth by New Zealand, Egypt and Spain.
