Ahmadinejad congratulates Suleiman
Source: alalam.ir, 26-05-2008
TEHRAN-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has congratulated Michel Suleiman on his election as Lebanon's new president.
In a phone contact with Suleiman Sunday night, Ahmadinejad reassured the new president that Iran would always stand besides the Lebanese nation.
Suleiman appreciated Iran's efforts in resolving Lebanon's crisis, saying any discord in Lebanon would just benefit the occupying 'Israeli' regime, the state news agency IRNA said.
He called on the Islamic Republic to continue its support for steps aimed at strengthening stability in Lebanon.
Ahmadinejad also phoned the head of the Lebanese resistance movement Hizbullah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and congratulated him on the election of a new president in Lebanon.
Nasrallah said that enemies of the Lebanese nation were in a very weak position.
Suleiman took the oath of office as the 12th president on Sunday, filling a post left vacant for six months and ending a political crisis that threatened a new civil war.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the election of Suleiman was a big victory for Lebanon, ISNA news agency reported earlier Monday.
ISNA quoted Mottaki as saying that following Suleiman's election a new chapter has opened in the history of Lebanon.
"I had a very important meeting with the Lebanese president and we had an excellent exchange and our relations are well," Mottaki told reporters after the meeting.
