Change and Reform bloc demands full implementation of Doha agreement
Source: Nowlebanon.com, 26-05-2008
In a live press conference after a weekly Change and Reform bloc meeting on Monday, MP Ibrahim Kanaan said the election of General Michel Suleiman as Lebanon's 12th elected post-independence president was a "first step" in implementing the Doha agreement.
The statement also conveyed the bloc's surprise at the reservations of some MPs over the electoral procedure. Kanaan said he hoped these reservations were "a formality" and not a more serious indicator.
On behalf of the bloc, Kanaan read out a statement in which he called for the swift implementation of all clauses in the agreement by forming a new national-unity government and adopting an electoral law that curbed marginalized Christian representation.
"This is what General Michel Aoun has always demanded," Kanaan said of the bloc leader. The statement also noted the "great sacrifices" General Aoun had made for the presidency.
The MP stated the "full basket" that Aoun had always called for had proved to be the means to a solution in Lebanon, despite the objections of some local leaders.
The statement hailed the anniversary of the liberation of southern Lebanon as the fruits of "Lebanese unity," which also led to the Doha agreement.
