Syrian media advisor says Syria has no objection to diplomatic relations
Source: Nowlebanon.com, 27-5-2008
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's media advisor Saber Falhout said his country did not object to the exchange of diplomatic representation with Lebanon, adding that "the general atmosphere and new steps taken in Lebanon after the Doha agreement encouraged the move forward."
Falhout reiterated President Michel Sleiman's call for amended Syrian-Lebanese relations in his inaugural speech Sunday. In a talk with AKI, Falhout said Syria had "no objection in principle."
The advisor articulated the importance of "high-level diplomatic relations between two fraternal members of the Arab League," but said determining the new relation required serious changes that would enhance joint action between the two countries.
Falhout said the Doha agreement would contribute to the restoration of normalcy in Lebanon, and subsequently encourage advancing the relationship between the two countries.
He also denounced the "unfair accusations" against Syria made by some Lebanese parties, who Falhout said had forgotten the "enormous sacrifices made by Syria for its brothers in Lebanon, and for the stability and steadfastness of Lebanon, which allowed it to achieve victory in the South."
