Parliamentary Human Rights Committee member: Saniora "not efficient" as Lebanon PM
Source: Alalam.ir, 29-05-2008
BEIRUT-Nominated Prime Minister Fouad Saniora is not the consensus candidate for the premiership post, so his re-appointment to the post is feared to erupt a new political crisis in Lebanon, an official has opined.
Marwan Fares, a member of the Lebanese Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights, told Alalam Thursday that Michel Suleiman, who was elected Lebanese president on the basis of intra-Lebanese consensus, is not satisfied with Saniora's premiership.
He said the opposition has told the president that based on the Taif accord, they have been given the guaranteed right to have a one third share in the National unity government and since they have a role in the government's political decision makings and activities, so they have enough power to run political affairs in line with public interests and the country's domestic and foreign policies, aiming promotion of ties with the Arab world.
He added that Saniora's re-appointment is not backed by the majority and on a consensus basis and though opposition leader Saad Hariri has stressed that it will not be an affront to anybody, the news has shocked the Lebanese people who have a three-year experience of Saniora being on power.
He said the Lebanese people want a prime minister that would honor their national will, whereas "all know that he (Saniora) has links with foreigners and is not impartial."
