SSNP: Saniora appointment a "provocative step"
Source: NowLebanon.com, 29-05-2008
The Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) said the election of army commander Michel Suleiman as President of the Republic under the Doha agreement created a "positive shock" among the Lebanese.
The SSNP congratulated General Suleiman on the presidency and said they had faith in his judgment.
After a party meeting headed by Ali Qanso, the SSNP said they felt "general satisfaction" that accompanied the election of Suleiman had been weakened by the appointment of Fouad Saniora as Prime Minister. The party described Saniora's appointment as "a provocative step that does not reflect the philosophy of Doha-based compatibility."
The SSNP warned against any attempt to ignore the rights of the resistance "in their struggle to liberate our land and defend Lebanon against Zionist threats." The party also warned against any attempt to introduce World Bank and International Monetary Fund "recipes" into the ministerial statement.
