"After a struggle from 2006 until today on the Memorandum of Understanding between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizbullah, it has become evident to the Lebanese and the world that there is no better understanding on Hizbullah's arms," said Free Patriotic Movement leader General Michel Aoun.
At a press conference following the Change and Reform bloc weekly meeting, Aoun said he was "proud" that President Michel Suleiman's inaugural speech received applause at the points that the Memorandum of Understanding called for.
"We discussed the Doha conference agreements ... which is the road to real participation in rule, until those who today demand participation can concretize their presence in parliament," Aoun said. He strongly denounced all "financial interference" in the elections, which he defined as an act of enmity towards the opposition. "We want clean, honest elections in all the districts that represent us... Whoever wants our political friendship has to control the use of money," he stated.
General Aoun called for "true representation" in the next national-unity government. "The opposition bloc was loyal, and gave 2.5 to the president. But the pro-government bloc was disloyal and gave 0.5. Hence, the president has 3 ministers," he said.
Since consultations on the government, which ended Saturday, did not involve Speaker Nabih Berri, Aoun said he was in a position where he could request the same ministries Berri had requested. Incumbent Prime Minister Fouad Saniora would be charged with making the final decision, he continued.
"We asked Prime Minister Saniora for the Ministries of Finance, Public Works, Health, Social Affairs, and either Agriculture or Industry," Aoun stated. "There is a clear number of ministries, and a clear way of distributing the sovereign ministries. Just as the ministries were divided into 16-11-3, the ministries can be distributed." General Aoun insisted that the president's share of ministries should be neutral and assured the Lebanese that he would not veto anyone in the formation of the new cabinet, and particularly not Elias al-Murr.
"I paid the price of presidency to liberate these [electoral] districts from imprisonment. I will not let go of corruption, this is an ongoing time. But I will not name the corrupt yet, until I have the power," General Aoun stated. "If the president has no privileges, other than protocol, what difference will the vice president make?" Aoun questioned in response to a journalist's question. He underlined his insistence on fighting corruption, saying, he would not give in until he got rid of the parasites that were choking the pine tree.
General Aoun congratulated "the resistance on the liberation of Nassim Nisr," who was freed from an ‘Israeli' prison after six years imprisonment on Sunday, adding that he hoped that "the rest of the detainees will be freed."
Aoun denounce the Saturday's attacks on the military and urged the army to exercise caution. On rumors that Fatah al-Islam had adopted the bombings, Aoun said the bombings did not have the "style" of Fatah al-Islam acts and said he awaited the results of the investigations into the incidents.
On Saturday, Lebanese soldiers shot dead a man carrying a hand grenade and wearing a belt containing an explosives charge near a military checkpoint outside the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Helweh. The incident came just hours after a Lebanese soldier was killed in a blast at an army intelligence post in the northern city of Abdeh and another explosive device was defused.
General Aoun reassured that Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's pride in his membership in the "Wilayat al-Faqih [Guardianship of the Jurist] party" lacked the means and conditions for the establishment of the Wilayat al-Faqih state. "Lebanese society does not listen... The Shiaa themselves say they request pluralism," he stated.
Last Monday on the eighth anniversary of the liberation of the Lebanese South, Nasrallah addressed a crowd in Beirut's southern suburb. Nasrallah spoke out on the rumored prisoner exchange with ‘Israel', the difference between defense and resistance strategies - or the need to bring the two closer together, arms, his membership in "the Wilayat al-Faqih party" and the party's duty to preserve Lebanon's pluralism.
