Assad: Diplomatic representation is a Syrian demand
Source: NowLebanon.com, 03-06-2008
Syrian President Basshar Al-Assad said that diplomatic representation between Beirut and Damascus is a Syrian demand dating back to 2005.
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, in his inauguration speech, also raised the matter of diplomatic representation between the two countries and addressed the issue of drawing the border.
"The problem is not between Lebanon and Syria but between the former and 'Israel'. Part of the Lebanese territory is still occupied," Assad told journalists in Abu Dhabi.
"Once this problem is solved, we will be ready to draw the border with Lebanon," he added.
Assad said that Damascus is ready to deal with any "national government" in Lebanon, regardless of the identity of its members.
The Lebanese daily As-Safir said that Assad, who is visiting Lebanon in mid-June, will announce the establishment of diplomatic relations with Lebanon from the presidential palace in Baabda.
