The Higher Shia Islamic Council expressed its regret over the security incidents ... that led to the loss of lives and property and the de-escalation of social and economic conditions in the country."
Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan, head of the council, said the election of General Michel Suleiman as President of the Republic, which coincided with the liberation and resistance day, was an affirmation of the importance of the Lebanese resistance in preserving Lebanon's sovereignty, independence and the dignity of its citizens.
"I hope that the Doha agreement put an end to the political crisis that led to the division of national security," Sheikh Qabalan added.
The council said it jointly felt that the Doha agreement was "whole" and must be complemented by the implementation of all its clauses. "Therefore, we must speed up the formation of a national-unity government and approve the electoral law in order to strengthen a positive atmosphere, stabilize political settlement and secure the functioning of constitutional institutions," the council said in a statement.
The Higher Shia Islamic Council called on Lebanese security forces, "which enjoy the support of all parties," to exercise their role fully and assume their responsibilities in preserving security, maintaining stability and protecting citizens.
The council also condemned the recent attacks on the Lebanese army.
