Olmert: Gaza Truce Deal Temporary
Source: Alalam.ir, 19-06-2008
AL-QUDS--The ‘Israeli' occupying regime's Premier Ehud Olmert has cast doubt on the future of a truce agreement with Hamas, saying the deal with the resistance movement in the Gaza Strip is temporary and short-lived.
Olmert's remarks came just a day after the truce agreement and a few hours before the occupying regime's fresh attacks on the Hamas forces which killed one Palestinian and wounded 5 others in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, medics said.
The man, whose identity was not immediately known, was hit in the south of Gaza City, Palestinian emergency services said.
The Palestinian resistance movement' fighters, in a retaliatory move, fired at least 50 rockets and mortars, targeting the occupiers.
The clashes started on Wednesday, while the Palestinian man was killed on Thursday fights.
Olmert was quoted by Ha'aretz daily as saying: "We have no illusions. The calm is temporary and may be very short," claiming that "Hamas has not changed its skin."
The ‘Israeli' prime minister stressed that he had not and would not negotiate directly with Hamas, reiterating ‘Israel's' position that the release of Gilad Shalit, an ‘Israeli' soldier who was taken prisoner by Hamas in 2006, was inherent to the truce deal.
Earlier on Wednesday, the regime's spokesman Mark Regev confirmed the Gaza ceasefire deal, saying that if the fighting indeed ceases Thursday as planned, the regime will ease its blockade of Gaza next week.
Egypt and Hamas announced Tuesday that a ceasefire between Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and the Zionist regime would go into effect 6:00 local time (0300 GMT) Thursday.
‘Israel' reportedly approved the deal after Egyptian diplomats told the regime's war ministry official Major General Amos Gilad, who was in Cairo on Tuesday for talks, that Hamas had agreed to ‘Israel's' demands.
However, Gilad emphasized Wednesday that the truce does not constitute a peace deal.
"This is not a peace agreement. There is an understanding that is based on the effectiveness of military activities until now, and the will to stop it. At this point, we are exhausting the possibilities," Gilad said.
