Fierce clashes broke out Sunday between supporters of the pro-government and the opposition in the northern town of Tripoli killing one person and wounding 18 people. The clashes in Baal Mohsen and the district of Tabbaneh broke out around 6 am, according to police.
Mortars, Rocket-Propelled Grenade launchers and automatic rifles were used in the confrontation, police reported.

Local reporters in Tripoli said that the thuds of exploding RPGs and Mortar rounds echoed across the city early in the morning accompanied by staccato bursts of machine gun fire.

No reason could be given for the sudden outbreak of clashes in the tense districts. Sniper fire has blocked traffic in three streets surrounding Baal Mohsen district. Police blocked traffic across such exposed streets in an effort to avert exposing civilians.
