Karami sees no reconciliations while "historic grudges" remain
Source: nowlebanon.com, 24-06-2008
Former Prime Minister Omar Karami denounced the recent events in Tripoli on Tuesday.
"We know that there are sectarian and factional backgrounds that politics often exploits, and His Eminence the Mufti of Tripoli and the North has attempted to join opponents of the Baal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhoods," Karami noted. "We support what His Eminence has done, and we hope that he will be an example for all clerics."
After visiting the residents of Baal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh who were injured in this week's clashes, Karami remarked that the Doha Agreement was not a terminal solution but a temporary truce "because historical grudges still exist."
On the army's ability to control the situation in Tripoli, Karameh said, "Of course the army is capable, and its job is to maintain security by all means available."
The former premier said public opinion in Tripoli denounced the fighting, and called on the army to maintain the security and safety of citizens.
