“Israel” will officially head to the polls on April 9 after the Knesset's session voted to unanimously dissolve itself on Wednesday evening.

The final vote passed with an uncontested 102 to 2 votes in favor of the bill, after hours of committee debates and heated session.

The bill plainly states that the 20th Knesset will “dissolve itself ahead of elections” setting forth the date for polls - agreed upon by both the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition and opposition parties - as April 9, 2019.

The first opinion polls conducted in the wake of the announcement show Netanyahu’s right wing Likud party with a firm grip on power and a strong lead over potential challengers if ballots were cast today.

Netanyahu has been prime minister for a total of more than 12 years, from 1996 to 1999 and again since 2009.
