TEHRAN--Iranian President Ahmadinejad stated on Tuesday that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) could have a positive role in resolving the world issues by relying on its economic and political power.
Speaking at the 15th NAM foreign ministers' meeting in Tehran, Ahmadinejad said NAM could prevent escalation of violence and deepening of differences in the world through establishing a front of peace and justice.
Some 80 foreign ministers and representatives of international organizations are attending the four day event which was officially inaugurated by president Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Tuesday.
Ahmadinejad painted a gloomy picture of the world, saying the daily life of millions of world people is affected by insecurity and wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestinian territories and Africa among others.
He once again criticized the UN Security Council for serving the interests of world powers rather than all its member states.
He cited the council's shortcomings with regards to "crimes committed by the Zionist regime of "Israel"" in the occupied Palestinian territories and Lebanon and said that the world body has so far acted in favor of the Zionists.
Ahmadinejad also referred to the United States military invasions in Iraq and Vietnam and said that he UN would never condemn the US or issue a resolution against it.
"The Vietnam war was not ended by the UN but through heroic resistance by the Vietnamese themselves," said the Iranian president, indicating that the Middle East crisis should also eventually be settled through resistance.
"The US even wants a security pact for Iraq which would definitely undermine the rights of the Iraqi nation," he added.
The president blamed occupation troops in Iraq for leaving millions of people dead, displaced and desperate and warned it is turning into an insurmountable humanitarian crisis.
Ahmadinejad had harsh words for the occupying "Israeli" regime, saying the "60-year-old wound on the Palestinian body" carries out daily carnage of Palestinian people.
The president also said that the UN has also failed to implement its own efforts at nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
"We are, however, entering a new phase where the rights of the people could be served through love and brotherhood," he said.
"NAM could now, more than ever, play a significant role in this new phase and settle global differences, block discrimination, create justice and eventually become flag-holder of peace in the world," Ahmadinejad added.
Turning to international economic woes, he pinned the blame on increased greenhouse gas emission, US dollar depreciation and artificial spiraling of oil and gas prices.
Major countries are manipulating monetary systems in a bid to gain control of markets to serve US interests in a move which undermines other nations' role in using their own resources, Ahmadinejaid complained.
President Ahmadinejad also condemned the indictment of Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir by an international prosecutor on charges of genocide in Darfur.
Ahmadinejad told the Non-Aligned Movement's foreign ministers the International Criminal Court's prosecutor who indicted al-Bashir on July 14 should instead press charges against "Israeli" authorities for assassinating opponents and imposing a food and medicine blockade against Palestinians.
"Iran is your home," he told the more than 100 officials of the NAM member states at the end of his speech while declaring Iran's readiness for the expansion of NAM's role in world affairs.
