DAMASCUS--Syrian President Bashar Assad is expected to head to Tehran next weekend for a two-day visit for talks on Iran's nuclear program, FARS news agency has reported.
During his visit Assad is supposed to meet with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and some other senior Iranian officials.
He will also meet with top brass Iranian police on various security matters pertaining to the two countries.
Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister Walid al-Muallem paid a visit to Tehran to attend the 15th Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement and met with the Iranian president.
Ahmadinejad pledged he would work to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
He also emphasized that he had no intention of letting any outside factor impact the strategic alliance between Iran and Syria.
"The deeper our regional cooperation is, the more beneficial this will be to both nations in the area and the more this will impair our enemies," he said.
On the sidelines of the NAM meeting, Muallem also held a series of talks with Ahmadinejad, Mottaki, and Parliament speaker Ali Larijani in preparation for Assad's visit.
Besides Iran's nuclear program, Assad's talks in Tehran is also expected to deal with bilateral relations, the situations in Lebanon and Iraq.
