Iran Successfully Test-Fires Naval Arms
Source: Alalam.ir, 3-8-2008
TEHRAN--The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Brigadier Generel Mohammad Ali Jaafari, announced on Monday the successful testing of a naval weapon that could destroy any vessel in a range of 300 km (190 miles).
Brigadier Jaafari said the IRGC has recently tested a naval weapon with a 300 km range that could target any vessel within its range and "would send it to the depths".
He added the weapons system introduces state-of-the-art technology never used before.
"The design and production technology used in this weapon is completely indigenous to Iran and has never been employed by any other country," Jafari said but did not give details.
Jafari's comment came after Iran test-fired various types of long and short ranges missiles during a military exercise in the Persian Gulf aimed at increasing readiness of the country's military forces against possible threats.
Iran has "capability of closing the Strait of Hormuz easily and on an unlimited basis," state radio quoted Jafari as telling a news conference.
"In view of the proximity of the Strait of Hormuz ... to our shores, this distance is within the range of an assortment of weapons and its closure for us is very feasible and we face no limitations from the point of view of time," Jaafari said, referring to any probable attacks by US and Zionist regime.
Oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz, the sea channel along Iran's coastline at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, is estimated to account for roughly 40 percent of all seaborne oil traded, most of it going to Asia, the United States and Western Europe.
