Masses of Iraqis take part in the funeral procession of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, both assassinated in US airstrikes in the country’s capital of Baghdad, on January 4, 2020.

Iraq's prime minister attended a mourning procession in Baghdad .

Adel Abdel Mahdi joined Muhandis associate Hadi al-Ameri, Shiite cleric Ammar al-Hakim, former premier Nuri al-Maliki and other pro-Iran figures in a large crowd.

Hundreds of thousands of mourners have turned out in Baghdad for the funeral of the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps [IRGC], and the second-in-command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units [PMU], who were assassinated in US airstrikes.

The participants gathered at the pilgrimage district of Kadhimiyah in Baghdad on Saturday before heading to the Green Zone district and diplomatic compound, where a state funeral was to be held, attended by top Iraqi military and government officials.

The Iraqis, chanting "Death to America", accompanied coffins shrouded in national flags.
