Tutu: Palestinians Paying for West΄s Holocaust Guilt
Source: Al-Manar TV, 19-9-2008
Archbishop Desmond Tutu appointed by UN to investigate the Beit Hanoun massacre said that the West is "feeling contrite, penitent' due to the holocaust", but penance, he added, is being paid by Palestinians. Tutu lashed out at the West saying "it has failed to pressure "Israeli" to reach a just and lasting peace."
Tutu was appointed by the UN to investigate an "Israeli" massacre in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, in which 19 Palestinians, including children, were killed.
"Israel's" firing of artillery toward Beit Hanoun in 2006 showed disproportionate, reckless disregard for Palestinian civilian life,' the archbishop said in his report to UN Human Rights Council.
"I just hope that ordinary citizens in the West will wake up and say, 'we refuse to be part of this'," Tutu added after presenting his report.
It concluded that "in the absence of a well-founded explanation from the "Israeli" military... the mission must conclude that there is a possibility that the shelling of Beit Hanoun in 2006 constituted a war crime."
In his address to the Council, Tutu also accused the international community of failing to fulfill its role in respect of the suffering of the people of Gaza. "It is the silence of the international community in the face of what is happening there which most offends. This silence begets complicity," he said in his report.
Tutu also condemned rocket fire by Palestinians in Gaza against "Israeli" civilians and said Hamas was responsible for ensuring it ceased.
