The head of the Khiam Rehabilitation Center for the Victims of Torture (KRC) urged the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday to create a tribunal to try "Israeli" leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the recent war on Lebanon. "`Israel` should compensate the Lebanese for the losses inflicted during the July offensive," Mohammad Safa said.
Speaking during the council`s second session in Geneva, Safa called for releasing all Arab detainees held in "Israeli" prisons, as well as for revealing the fate of missing persons believed to have been taken by "Israeli" forces.
"`Israel` arrested around 10,000 detainees, with many of them having been detained for almost 30 years ... Detained women are even giving birth in `Israeli` prisons amid complete Arab and international silence," he said. "However, when the resistance captured two `Israeli` soldiers [on July 12] the whole world reacted and `Israel` waged a barbaric war against Lebanon."
The KRC official also called on countries "that provided `Israel` with weapons and munitions that were used to bombard Lebanon" to offer the same amount of support to the reconstruction process.
"I am here to tell you that our people are stronger than death and massacres. I am also here to condemn the duality of human rights` criteria," he said.
