Wahhab: Government should spare Lebanon from coming regional storm
Source: nowlebanon.com, 24-01-2009
Former Minister Wiam Wahhab said he regretted that Lebanon was replete with political money and that Prime Minister Fouad Saniora had signed for financial waste and excess in recent years. He also asserted that former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri had depended upon bribing militias.
"Ballots are looted by all parties and the ballot boxes should be locked," he told LBC on Saturday.
Wahhab said the dialogue roundtable was a waste of time in attempting to reach any solution on Lebanon's political future and stressed the importance of agreeing on a formula of governance that could spare Lebanon from the coming regional storm, also advocating further amending the presidential privileges of the Tail Agreement. Without such steps, he said, "there will be no reference point in Lebanon that has the power to end debates."
He noted that Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji worked on coordination with Syria, "which facilitated the uncovering of a number of security operations and it appears that the cell that assassinated General Francois al-Hajj has been uncovered." General Hajj was assassinated by a car bomb on December 12, 2007.
"The identity of the suicide bomber who blew himself up [assassinating Prime Minister Rafik Hariri] was revealed," Wahhab also asserted, saying that the individual was of Saudi Arabian nationality.
Wahhab said that the Lebanese army previously facilitated "the armament of the Resistance before UN Security Council Resolution 1701 because Lebanon was in a state of confrontation with the ‘Israeli' enemy."
In reference to Israeli's 22-day offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Wahhab said "Israel" had not achieved its desired goals against Hamas, "even after they benefited from the experience of July 2006."
"No one can say anything [bad] about the performance of [Justice] Minister Ibrahim Najjar, despite our political differences, nor about [Transport and Public Works] Minister Ghazi Aridi nor Minister [of State] Mohammad Qabbani," he said, in defense of his co-religious Druze political figures.
