Franjieh: We are stronger today than when we were in power
Source: nowlebanon.com, 02-02-2009
Marada Movement leader Suleiman Franjieh stated he and his allies were stronger today than they were when they were in power.
"The other team that uses intimidation and money to win elections to make us believe that they are stronger, but this team is in fact the weaker [party] and the loser in the upcoming elections," Franjieh, a former interior minister, said during a meeting with Marada officials representing trade unions Monday.
Electoral alliances in Zgharta would never change, he added. "People know us and our beliefs and aims, so I feel at ease and am looking forward to entering parliament with a whole bloc."
Franjieh stressed the need for cooperation with the Arab world to safeguard "our families and our homes ... because the West does not protect anyone."
The Zgharta-based leader defended his long-term alliance with Syria, saying time had proved it was the right choice. Syria was the targets of attempt to remove its current regime and replace it with a sectarian system, he added. "This does not benefit us at all. What we need is a secular system in Syria, in Egypt and in all regions. If the conspiracy was not foiled, we would be facing resettlement ... What matters is subsequent actions and measures," he said.
