Former Prime Minister Omar Karami said, after meeting with Romania's ambassador to Lebanon, Daniel Tanase, on Saturday, that the country was witnessing tensions but that this was normal in the lead up to parliamentary elections.

He noted the divisions and disagreements within public discourse and called on religious authorities not to intervene in politically controversial issues because they would be then putting themselves in a position that might lead to criticism of their performances.

He rejected attacks on the army command because this was not in the country's interest. He also praised army commander's policy.
