Social Affairs Minister Mario Aoun told NBN television on Saturday that the Free Patriotic Movement had contributed to Britain's decision to seek greater openness in their relations with Hizbullah.

He said the FPM had confidence in the ministerial committee in charge of discussing the memorandum of understanding between Lebanon and the Special Tribunal into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, noting Labor Minister Mohammad Fneish represented the FPM in the committee.

He stated the March 14 alliance had been reassured by the visit of US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, more than by the openness between Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Aoun added he had hoped Feltman would not have excluded meeting with opposition officials during his visit to Lebanon, especially after the new American administration took office, but "we all know that Feltman supported the March 14 alliance when he was US ambassador to Lebanon."
