Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya Deputy Secretary General Ibrahim al-Masri told Al-Balad newspaper on Wednesday that the Egyptian regime was exploiting the issue of Sami Chehab in an "unclean" manner. Chehab is one of 49 people being held in Egypt on suspicion of belonging to Hizbullah, planning attacks against prominent Egyptian figures and interests and calling for a rebellion against Egypt's leadership.

He stated that this issue was exaggerated because "sending a resistance member to support jihadists in Gaza is not an indictment."

Masri also said that involving Iran in this case was intended to give an impression that this issue was sectarian, which he added was totally untrue.

Masri said the timing of the Egyptian campaign against Hizbullah was intended to pressure Hamas as negotiations are set to resume between Palestinian factions in Cairo.
"Egypt is taking one side against the other, by associating Hamas with the so-called Iranian agenda in the region," he said.
