Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Monday that the Internal Security Forces was investigating with retired Brigadier Adib al-Alam and his wife, both who were arrested on Saturday before last, for spying for "Israel".

The investigation revealed that Alam was monitoring with his wife the seaside road toward Jbeil on May 26, 2006, when a Mossad agent assassinated the two leaders of the Islamist Jihad Movement in Saida, brothers Mahmoud and Nidal al-Majzoub.

The paper also said that the monitoring process facilitated the agent's escape via Jbeil's shore. Al-Hayat said that both Mahmoud Rafah and Hussein Khattab were involved in the case. Rafah was arrested, while Khattab, a Palestinian who resided in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp, had fled to the Palestinian territories.

Alam confessed that he had taken some pictures of Syrian facilities and Lebanese bridges and highways and sent them to the Mossad.
