Aoun: I Will Only Accept Proportional Representation in Cabinet
Source: almanar.com.lb, 09-07-2009
Head of the Change and Reform parliamentary bloc MP Michel Aoun renewed on Wednesday calls for a proportional representation in the government, saying that such representation would guarantee real partnership and enforce national unity.
Following his parliamentary bloc's weekly meeting, Aoun highlighted to reporters the fact that partnership can only be achieved through numbers and proportions. "We are a large minority and they are a small majority," he pointed out. He went on to say "The best deal is for the cabinet to be a replica of parliament," denying that the opposition was seeking to get the veto power. "There is no veto power, but there is proportional representation," he explained.
The General said that the meeting held on Tuesday between his envoy Minister Gebran Bassil and Prime Minister-Designate Saad Hariri was good, noting that the meeting addressed general matters. However, he reiterated that the conditions of the formation of the government are dictated by external sources. "Referring to Beirut is best to form the government," he pointed out.
"Those who are imposing conditions are the ones who are hindering the formation of government," the Free Patriotic Movement leader emphasized. "The conditions are being dictated from outside," he explained.
