The US Treasury announced on Wednesday a round of new sanctions on Iran, in order to restrain its nuclear program, this time including a blacklist containing Iranian state-controlled bank, shipping-line companies, and air force and missile commands of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
These US actions come as the first steps to put into operation the recent UN Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran. The new US sanctions prohibit ant transactions with the firms and bodies listed in the blacklist.
US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, in a White House press briefing, said that they are willing to set more actions to increase financial pressure on Iran, starting in upcoming weeks.
As a response to the US imposed financial sanctions, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, announced that Iran is working on building new nuclear reactor.
Iran's official television quoted Salehi saying that Iran plans on building new nuclear reactors in the north, south, east, and west, in order to develop medical research facilities.
Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization stressed that Iran has its own policies in dealing with western countries, stating that their policies are based on respectable dialogue, and continuing their peaceful nuclear program as a mean of pressure on the enemies.
The UN Security Council has recently forced a new round of sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program, knowing that it is under the supervision of the UN nuclear watchdog, and a signatory in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
